Cambria to Monterey California

Wednesday 8th January 2020

This morning we explored Cambria, a great little town with lots of antique shops before visiting the elephant seal colony on our way north to Monterey via Big Sur.

The elephant seals are monstrous in size. The males weigh in at 2300 kgs. They live in this area all year round. January is the calving month so we saw dozens of brand new seals. Their birth weight averages around 33 kg and they quadruple that in their first month!

It was a spectacular drive today, once again hugging the coast, but this stretch of the highway is very windy and subject to land slips and rock falls.

We spent some time in Carmel-by-the-Sea before driving onto Monterey to spend the night. We dined down on the pier at Cannery Row.
