Mangonui

Monday 8th December

We drove from Paihia to Mangonui via Kerikeri.  Mangonui is a very sleepy fishing village in Doubtless Bay.  We have a great beachfront apartment overlooking the Bay in Coopers Beach.  In times gone past this was a whaling centre.  Coopers Beach being named after the coopers who lived here whilst making the wooden barrels for the whale oil to be transported back to the United States.  Mill Bay had a timber sawmill and a flax mill.  Cable Bay was where the underwater telegraph cable connected NZ to mainland Australia.  But this is where we plan to base ourselves for our trip to the very northern tip of NZ.
