Nashville to Memphis, Tennessee

Sunday 15th December 2019

8C – 13C Foggy morning. Partly cloudy.

In the words of Johnny Cash “I’m going to Memphis, Memphis Tennessee.”

We drove out of a foggy Nashville this morning. The streets were quiet being a Sunday and made our way to a roadside stop for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel. As always, another interesting exercise in ordering food and coffee. A basket of bread (biscuits) turns out to be scones with whipped butter and grape jam. As hard as Sean tried to get an espresso he still ended up with an iced latte, fortunately they hadn’t added a sweet syrup which is a standard practice.

We made good time and checked into our hotel just off Beale Street and walked down to the American Civil Rights Museum. It has been developed on the site of the Lorraine Motel where, on 4/4/1968 Martin Luther King was assassinated. The museum provides a very sobering account of slavery, emancipation, segregation and the civil right movement over the past 400 years. Not a lot to be proud of.

We finished off the evening enjoying southern style cooking at Central BBQ. A meal for one managed to feed 5 of us. The beer and cider was refreshing.

Had hoped to catch a drink in Beale Street, but were disappointed, it was very, very quiet. We gave up and came home to enjoy an early night.

  1. Their food is certainly interesting – sometimes maddening – as Sean would have found when trying to order an espresso coffee. Drove Garry crazy when we were there!
The photos are great; love seeing them, thanks.
