Santa Fe to Grand Canyon

Saturday 28th December 2019

We woke to snow this morning and lots of it.  All of the cars in the carpark were covered in snow, fortunately for us our vehicles were parked undercover.

Heavy snowfalls overnight

Over breakfast we discussed travel tactics as it was going to be tough driving conditions on snow and ice with the road reports indicating lots of warnings.  The weather forecast was also rather grim with snow storms expected.  We drove through the city to the Interstate (freeway) to find that the roads were clear of snow and the skies were clear of the storm fronts. We made good time to Gallup (lots of John Wayne cowboy movies filmed here) and then the weather closed in again. We took a short break to let it pass.  Back in the cars again we crossed the border into Arizona and the spectacular landscape of black mesas continued.  Sometimes the highway weaved in between them and other times we drove over them.

We took a detour into the Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert. Once again the landscapes were stunning as everything was frosted with snow.

Next stop was to ‘Stand on the Corner of Winslow Arizona’

That night we checked into Bright Angel Lodge in the Grand Canyon Village, our lodgings for the next 2 nights.
