It was only a couple of hours by road from Quebec to Montreal. Montreal is on an island and was host to the 1976 Olympic Games. Much of that infrastructure was still evident as we drove onto the island across the bridge. Today Montreal has a population of about 4 million people.
It was overcast and although there was some drizzle we seemed to miss it. We had lunch down in the old port (Vieux Port) area. Dined on a local dish of smoked meat – which it equivalent to a corn meat sandwich, however it has about 10 times as much meat on the sandwich.
We visited the Notre Dame Church. Very impressive interior with fantastic stained glass windows and an incredibly colourful wooden interior. Also learned about the 30 kms of underground shopping malls that wind their way under the streets of Montreal.
Dinner tonight was in the Vieux Port followed by a stroll up to a jazz club near by to our hotel and enjoyed the company of another couple on my trip Bill and Jenny Vincent. The music was great and the atmosphere just right. The lead singer did a lot of Tom Jones songs (very well). At the end of the evening I went up and said thank you and he gave me tickets for tomorrow night and his CD.
