New Orleans Day 3

Tuesday 14th March 2017

We made an effort to get out of bed in enough time to catch breakfast before taking a tour out of  town to “the swamp” or as it is known locally – the bayou.  If we thought the folk of the deep south were hard to understand, then the Swamp People were something else again.  We had to pay close attention to Reggie our guide who has lived in the Swamps all of his life and is a Baratarian – descended from the famous Spanish pirate Jean Laffite who had established a colony of pirates in the swampy marshlands in 1810.

The waterways provide access from the Gulf of Mexico up the Mississippi River to the port of New Orleans or as the locals pronounce it N’Awlins.

Once back in town we caught a street car (tram) out to the Garden District and wandered the streets to admire the beautiful homes.

We enjoyed a great meal at one of Dickie Brennan’s restaurants – The Palace Cafe.
